Postmodern Visual Analysis

The quote I chose for my postmodern piece was, "There is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects, rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world." The piece that I did to reflect this quote has a picture of four children with a gloomy, dark background. This picture also includes low opacity picture of Pennywise the clown from the book and movie IT, and a bright red balloon, also from the movie IT. This picture is 8.5 by 11 and is centered directly in the middle of the Bristol pad page. On the outside of the picture there is a bat on the right side and bat on the left side. From the bottom of these bats streaks blue and orange paint. There are green figures (sort of shaped like fireworks) above and below the picture centered in the middle. There is a black frame around the picture. Finally, uniformly throughout the art there are streaked ink blotches and dots.

The connotative level of this makes me feel tension. Since there are kids that are seemingly "happy" in the photograph and there are also some bright colors like red and orange to make you think happy too. However, there are so many things in the photograph that tell you not to feel happy. These things include: blacked out eyes of the children, the pumpkin head of one of the children, the spooky background of the picture, the faded pictures of Pennywise around the photo, and the black ink streaks all around the art piece. So, the tension is great - there are numerous components urging the viewer to feel different ways.

The ideological meaning can be derived first and foremost from the quote, "There is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects, rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world." The deviousness of children is shown in the seemingly normal, and happy children having an underlying devious side to them - this is shown through the blacked-out eyes and the pumpkin head. They are also in an image that seems as if its a family picture - resembling purity. However, the edge of the photo has a rough edge symbolizing the true underneath feelings of the children. There are also colors and shapes on the outside that are acting as to excite the viewer which should create an emotion that many people relate with children - spontaneity and excitement - and these only add to the feeling of tension when the blank ink splattered across the page is factored into account.
